(adj.) Intersex describes individuals born with anatomy, gonads, or chromosomes that do not fit typical definitions of male or female. Historically, intersex individuals often have their sex determined surgically which is ethically wrong and unnecesarry. There is a growing movement to delay such interventions until the individual is able to participate in the decision-making process surrounding their own body.
