(noun) See "Sex assigned at birth." The categorization of an infant as female, male, or intersex by a medical professional based on the appearance of the infant's genitalia and chromosomes. Also referred to as birth sex, natal sex, or biological sex. Examples: assigned female at birth (AFAB), assigned male at birth (AMAB). Often assumed to be binary (e.g., male/female, girl/boy) but science shows that even biological factors such as anatomy, hormones, chromosomes and genitalia can be complex, fluid, and non-binary. One's assigned sex at birth may not align with one's gender identity or gender expression.
