What is gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It often affects the urethra, rectum, or throat, and in women, it can also infect the cervix. Symptoms can include painful urination, abnormal discharge, and in women, pelvic pain, though many infected individuals may be asymptomatic. Gonorrhea is typically treated with antibiotics, such as ceftriaxone.
