HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that weakens the immune system by destroying CD4 cells (T cells), crucial for fighting infections. Without treatment, HIV can lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), where the immune system becomes severely compromised. Transmission occurs through unprotected sex, sharing needles, through childbirth or breastfeeding and blood transfusions. HIV can affect anyone, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.
